Orgalime Attends a Workshop on Secondary Raw Materials in a Circular Economy Organised by the European Parliament
On 31 January, Orgalime attended a workshop entitled “Supporting the Market for Secondary Raw Materials in a Circular Economy”.
The event was organised by the European Parliament at the request of the ENVI & ITRE Committees, in order to contribute to their understanding of the role and opportunities for secondary raw materials as part of the implementation of the Circular Economy Action Plan.
The workshop was chaired by MEP Simona Bonafè (ENVI, Rapporteur of ENVI Committee Reports on waste legislative proposals under the Circular Economy Package to revise the WEEE, Waste, Landfill and Packaging Directives) and MEP Pavel Telička MEP (ITRE, Vice President of the European Parliament and Rapporteur of ITRE Committee Opinion on the proposal to revise the WEEE Directive).
On 24 January, the ENVI Committee adopted its final position on the waste legislative package (read Orgalime’s initial reaction to the outcome here) and a vote in the plenary session of the Parliament is expected mid-March 2017.
The ENVI Committee Reports on the waste legislative package underline that to achieve the goals of the Circular Economy, we need to focus on the following two objectives: strengthening waste prevention measures and encouraging the development of a market for secondary raw materials.
The workshop addressed the following areas: understanding the secondary raw materials market, examining barriers in the value chain, production challenges of secondary raw materials and potential policy measures. You can view the video of the workshop here.
