On 24 January 2017, the European Parliament’s ENVI committee voted its draft reports on the Commission’s proposals for amending the Waste Directive and a series of related directives, including on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This legislation is of central importance to the manufacturers Orgalime represents, who today employ over 10.9 million people across the EU.

Orgalime was pleased to see clear progress in a number of areas. But there is still some way to go to arrive at a final Directive that strikes the right balance between the requirements of the Circular Economy and the Internal Market.

In this position paper, Orgalime calls on European regulators to support its recommendations on the way forward – particularly regarding the need to ensure that the final Directives adopted do not undermine the Internal Market. Building the Circular Economy at the expense of one of the EU’s greatest achievements would deeply undermine the European project, impacting on confidence in the Circular Economy and the attraction of the EU for manufacturing investment. As a result, it would work counter to the jobs and growth agenda.
