Common position on draft Eco Design Directive for energy using products (EUP)

On 29 November, the Energy Council adopted the common position on the draft Eco Design of Energy Using Products Directive (EUP). While we would have preferred to avoid any legislation in this area which is extremely sensitive for our industry as the design of a product is at the heart of a manufacturing, we feel that the Council has driven the proposal forward, bringing a number of welcome clarifications to the texts and aiming to ensure that better regulation principles are applied to any implementing legislation. We will now be working on issues where we would like to see further progress including the reduction of unnecessary complexity and administration in the area of conformity assessment and an improvement in the market surveillance provisions with a view to avoiding unfair competition from non compliant products.
