RoHS recast – Is this what Smart Regulation is about?

Today, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee adopted the draft report of Rapporteur Jill Evans on the proposal for a recast Directive on the Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS). “When the European Commission launched its recast proposal, this was meant to be a minor adjustment to a directive which has been operating for just a couple of years. And it was meant to be an example of the new “Smart Regulation”. Instead it looks as if we are facing a major overhaul which includes items which have not even been subject to any impact assessment. This is not a good signal to industry that it is welcome to contribute to Europe’s economic recovery”, commented Adrian Harris, Director General of Orgalime.
